Jim O'Brien

Vice President of Server Development

There is something special going on at CounterPath. We've brought together our carrier class softphone and our carrier-grade configuration and FMC servers in a way that provides real value for our carrier, enterprise and OEM customers. With our new hosted service offerings, we eliminate the barriers to entry for even our smallest enterprise customers.

As Vice President of Server Engineering, Support and IT, Jim O'Brien directs the server engineering team in architecting, building, hosting and supporting CounterPath’s Stretto Platform™ solutions. These solutions work closely with CounterPath Bria softphones to provide customers an unparalleled user experience that includes configuration management, device logging and a help desk assistant, user experience metrics, fixed-mobile convergence capabilities, instant messaging and presence, collaboration and push notifications.

Jim also provides direction to CounterPath’s support team which supports carrier, enterprise, SMB and retail customers. Additionally, he oversees the IT team that supports CounterPath’s infrastructure and users.

Jim has more than 20 years of experience in VoIP and mobile network engineering, development and deployment. Before joining BridgePort Networks in 2004 (now CounterPath), Jim was responsible for designing and deploying custom wholesale and enterprise VoIP services for Level(3) and Genuity customers. He also managed a team of engineers which provided marketing, sales, and operational support. Earlier in his career, Jim led a group of engineers who were responsible for new product direction, development and customer integration within GTE Internetworking's IP Telecom group.

Jim is an adjunct faculty member at Northeastern University where he teaches a course on IP Telephony for the Telecommunication Networks Program within the College of Engineering.

Jim holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer and Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has eight patents issued in the field of VoIP communications, and additional patents pending. Jim lives and works outside Boston, MA.
