As Vice President of Server Engineering, Operations and IT, Jim O'Brien directs the server engineering team in architecting, building, hosting and supporting CounterPath’s Stretto Platform™ solutions. These solutions work closely with CounterPath Bria softphones to provide customers an unparalleled user experience. Stretto Platform services include secure voice and video collaboration, push notifications, instant messaging and presence, SMS, remote troubleshooting and assistance, configuration management and device control, fixed-mobile convergence capabilities and a suite of voice quality monitoring and user experience metrics.
Jim also provides leadership to CounterPath’s operations and IT teams which support CounterPath’s corporate infrastructure. These teams also manage a global public and private cloud services infrastructure, providing Stretto services to Channel, Enterprise, SMB, and Carrier customers.
Jim has more than 20 years of experience in VoIP and mobile network engineering, development, and deployment. Before joining BridgePort Networks in 2004 (now CounterPath), Jim was responsible for designing and deploying custom wholesale and enterprise VoIP services for Level(3) and Genuity customers. He also managed a team of engineers that provided marketing, sales, and operational support. Earlier in his career, Jim led a group of engineers who were responsible for new product direction, development and customer integration within GTE Internetworking.
Jim is an adjunct faculty member at Northeastern University where he teaches a course on IP Telephony for the Telecommunication Networks Program within the College of Engineering.
Jim holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer and Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has eight patents issued in the field of VoIP communications with additional patents pending. Jim lives and works near Boston, Massachusetts.
