BCNET Partners with Xten to Bring Desktop Videoconferencing to BC’s Research & Education Institutions

BCNET Partners with Xten to Bring Desktop Videoconferencing to BC’s Research & Education Institutions

Vancouver, BC, Canada — September 05, 2014

BCNET (www.bc.net), a non-profit society for the development of advanced networks within the province, announced today that Xten, a developer of award-winning VoIP [Voice over IP], Video over IP, Instant Messaging and Presence SIP softphones, has signed on as a Corporate Partner with BCNET. XTEN will work with BCNET to test eyeBeamTM, Xten’s multi-platform, multi-point desktop videoconferencing solution for BCNET member stakeholders.

“We are very excited to be partnering with Xten to test their softphone technology for the research and education communities. Once it becomes fully operational, this technology will enable researchers and academics to interactively collaborate, over the Internet at a fraction of the cost of using conventional land-based phones,” said Mike Hrybyk, President and CEO of BCNET.

Using Xten’s VoIP softphone technologies, BCNET will enable users to conduct multi- point videoconferences over the Internet. Voice over IP (VOIP) and Video over IP are protocols that carry voice and video data over the Internet. As an alternative to land-based telephone lines, softphone applications allow users to send instant messages , and make and receive telephone calls over the Internet, often much less expensively than using landlines or cell phones.

Xten is happy to contribute to the local academic communities, I can see eyeBeam™ becoming a very useful tool for students when communicating via Voice, Video and IM both on and off campus,” said Erik Lagerway, President and COO of Xten.

“Desktop videoconferencing can change the way we work. By enabling face-to-face communication over the Internet, we can cut travel time and increase contact with academics and researchers across the province and around the world,” said Hrybyk. We are confident, that this type of technology will help our members to become more productive and effective.”
