Virtual Desktop

More and more, enterprises are moving their desktops and applications to the cloud to save costs and increase business agility. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) solutions benefit enterprises in a multitude of ways, including:

  • Centralized management. Administrators have central management of all of their company’s desktops, including what is being installed and used on them. Deployment of new software and updates is also easily managed from one data center and can be pushed out to all end users at once.
  • Cost savings. Both VDI and DaaS deployments make it easier to manage applications and operating systems centrally, saving significant administration and maintenance costs over time. Providers of VDI technology say their systems can save between 30% and 50% of the current cost for IT administrators to manage, patch, upgrade and support employees’ PCs in a client/server environment (Forbes).
  • Enhanced security. Data stays within the data center, not on users’ individual computers, making it easier for IT and operations staff to control anti-malware, intrusion prevention and other security precautions centrally. Also, if a user loses their device, or has it stolen, any sensitive information is stored on the server and not their device.

While it is true that Virtual Desktops typically run Windows, and thus can support standard applications such as PowerPoint, Outlook and Word, the majority of VoIP softphones cannot be deployed at scale in this way. VoIP is a real time application, and therefore is very sensitive to delays; sending VoIP packets from the end user’s headset to a cloud-based server in a remote location (sometimes 100s or 1,000s of kilometres away) can result in significant latency. Furthermore, with VoIP typically requiring 8,000 packets per second, sending all this media traffic to be processed by the server is simply not efficient, reducing the capacity of the server by 50% or more. For this reason, a specialized softphone client is required in which the media engine runs locally at the end point, and the rest of the client (e.g. Contacts, Instant Messaging / Presence, as well as the UI) runs on the server.
