CounterPath Announces Video Over Android, iPad and iPhone, and BroadWorks Integration at BroadSoft Connections 2011
Complete voice, messaging, presence and video offering now available for the most popular desktop and mobile operating systems
Vancouver, BC, Canada — October 18, 2011 – To help service providers and Internet Telephony providers grow revenues by leveraging video as the new key service to customers, CounterPath Corporation (OTCBB: CPAH) (TSX-V: CCV) today announced that, starting this fall with the next version of Bria iPhone Edition, CounterPath will offer a complete voice, messaging, presence and video offering for the most popular desktop and mobile operating systems. In addition, the company is also announcing integration with BroadSoft’s BroadWorks platform through the implementation of the most used features leveraging BroadSoft’s Xtended Services Interface (XSI).
Incumbent service providers are facing a significant threat in this new world of voice, messaging and video applications due to the popularity of VoIP companies such as Skype, which represents over 20% of international long-distance calling today1 as well as 82% of all mobile VoIP bandwidth2 , and Facebook, which now has enlisted over 10% of the world's population3. In fact, as smartphones and tablets continue to displace deskphones and cell phones in both the home and office, the demand for enterprise-grade applications that enable video calling has never been higher. Further, with market penetration of smartphones expected to be over 50% by 20154 , and mobile video calling estimated to exceed 130 million users by 20165, service providers are expected to be seeking video calling applications to offer their end users.
"Video applications are the next battle ground for service providers," said Todd Carothers, SVP of Marketing and Products at CounterPath. "Video is a critical component of the services mix for operators as users have become more sophisticated in their use of voice, messaging and now video, and expectations for communicating on their terms are driving providers to increase the bandwidth of their networks. Customers expect multiple ways of communicating—it's no longer about a single application. Significant opportunity exists to meet user requirements through allowing users to seamlessly communicate through the device and means they chose."
Extending video support from the desktop softphone into the smartphone and tablet space places CounterPath in a unique position in the market. Users of CounterPath supported mobile devices will now be able to launch their Bria softphone application, check the availability and status of colleagues, friends and family members, send an instant message or SMS/text message and launch a voice call and video call in a quick, intuitive and seamless manner whether they are at home, in the office or on the go.
CounterPath’s latest integration with BroadSoft’s Xtended Services Interface (XSI) offers end-users key features and settings accessible from both the Bria desktop and mobile softphone applications. The features supported are:
- Remote Office. Enables mobile users to access and use their BroadWorks telephone services from any end-point. Users can employ BroadWorks to originate calls from remote locations such as a home, office or mobile phone, providing them with full access to corporate directories and personal address books.
- Simultaneous Ring. Enables a user to have multiple numbers ring simultaneously when any calls are received on their phone number.
- BroadWorks Anywhere. Extends the features of a desk phone to any other fixed or mobile device, regardless of network or handset manufacturer.
- Call Forwarding/DND. Easily change telephony service settings such as Call Forward No Answer and Do Not Disturb (DND) while on the move.
- Contact and Call History. Dial contacts from a user’s address book as well as access and delete Call Logs of missed, received and dialed numbers.
"BroadSoft and CounterPath have many customers that rely on our joint solution," said David Bukovsky, Vice President, Product, BroadSoft. "We are excited that CounterPath has implemented the XSI framework to support some of the most popular features used across the BroadWorks platform and we look forward to continuing our work together meeting and exceeding the expectations of our customers."
The video enabled version of CounterPath’s Bria for iPhone will be available later this fall with the Android and iPad versions coming in early 2012. Bria for BroadWorks for iPhone will be available later this year with Android and iPad versions available early 2012.
